Noted Odissi Danseuse Sharmila Mukerjee to present ‘Kaikeyi’
Bangalore, April 1st 2017: Noted Odissi Dancer Sharmila Mukerjee will present ‘Kaikeyi’ – an Odissi Dance ballet that portrays Ramayana’s much maligned character in positive light. The production will be staged on 7th April, Friday at ADA Rangamandira at 6.30 p.m.
‘Kaikeyi’ isa part of Pravaha 2017 – a dance festival hosted by Guru Sharmila Mukerjee andSanjali Centre for Odissi dance, in sacred remembrance of legendary Odissidancer, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.
‘Kaikeyi’ bySharmila Mukerjee is an Abhinaya based piece along with some pureOdissi movements. The presentation will reinterpret thetraditional portrayal of the character as a heartless manipulator and a wickedqueen. Despite the flaws in her persona, Kaikeyi standsout in the epic because of the multitude of layers in her personality. Kaikeyiis a warm hearted, complex woman, who loved Ram as much as she loved her ownson. Her momentary emotion of despair and anger made her determined to see herson Bharat crowned as the king.
In Sharmila Mukerjee’s production, Kaikeyi will be portrayedas loving wife, a doting mother, a dutiful queen and a brave warrior. She isgentle yet brave, sensitive yet strong willed and stubborn, passionate butslightly confused, a woman bent on getting her own way, even if it ultimately destroysher happiness. Her character is one of catharsis, beauty, bravery and a wholelot of love.
The 30minute long piece begins with Kaikeyi as on old woman and takes you through aseries of flashbacks from specific episodes of Ramayana. The costume in thesolo performance has been carefully chosen to reflect the time and setting ofthe epic. The music for Kaikeyi has been composed by ShriBijoy Jena and the script is by Pt.Nityanand Mishra
As a part ofPravaha 2017, there will be an Odissi duet by Lingaraj and Sanjukta Pradhan anda group production by Ileana Citarisiti and Art vision.
