NGT to Karnataka State Government: Stop discharge of untreated sewage into the Bellandur Lake

12th April 2017, Wednesday: National Green Tribunal today warned the State of Karnataka that restraining directions will be passed against it, if discharge of untreated sewage into the Bellandur Lake is not stopped immediately. Chief Secretary of the state has been directed to be present before the Tribunal on the next hearing.

The Tribunalwas unhappy with the way Karnataka Lake Conservation and Development Authority(KLCDA) handled the lake fire issue and KLCDA along with other authorities havebeen directed to apprise the court about the measures taken post lake fireincident (16.02.2017) to prevent such accidents in future. The tribunal alsopulled up KLCDA and observed that it is the only lake development authority inthe world which is causing fire in the lakes.

MP RajeevChandrasekhar,Member, Rajya Sabha and Founder Trustee, Namma Bengaluru Foundation welcomedNGT’s move and said “I thank the NGT for stepping in and stopping thisgovernments rampant ongoing destruction of our city. This government has shownnot an iota of responsibility to stopping the exploitation of our city. It’stime to hold officials and departments accountable.”

SridharPabbisetty, CEO,Namma Bengaluru Foundation said “Like always, it is the courts that should stepin and ensure justice and accountability prevails. The govt agencies havefailed to perform their duties and instead have become corrupt arms of thecurrent government. NGT too has now taken up this issue and passing strictobservations to ensure our lakes are sewage free. It is imperative thatGovernment ensures critical infrastructure is put in place before uncontrolledapprovals are given for large development projects. We want KLCDA to no longerallow rampant abuse of our lakes that are in custody of various governmentagencies. Most of our lakes have disappeared due to illegal encroachment andcitizens of Bengaluru are left to bear the brunt of it. Today's observations byNGT further strengthens Namma Bengaluru Foundation's resolve to fight for theprotection and rejuvenation of all our lakes and water bodies.”
